Avatars are cartoon-like characters that you can customize to look like yourself, a celebrity, an animal or historical figure.

www.voki.com

This is one of my favorite sites these days. I have a blast
creating new vokis, so I'm sure students would love making them, too!
Keep in mind that you are only allowed to record 60 seconds of audio.
I'm not sure how many words you can type, but it's not many.
Below are some ways to use vokis in an educational setting:
1.Simply use them to announce upcoming events, either for the
class or entire school. This is how I've been using them the most up
to this point.

2. Create vokis to look like community helpers. Type or speak
clues for the students, such as "I work in a hospital. I help people
get well. Who am I?" (answer: nurse)

3. Create vokis to look like certain animals. Have the animal describe their habitats, diet, etc.

4. Students have the opportunity to create a voki of themselves if
they are student of the week. (A couple of the teachers at my school
are doing this.)

5. Use a voki to tell about a favorite book or book character.

6. Create vokis to look like people in history or politicians.
Voki.com has Abraham Lincoln, George Bush, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton,
etc. Students could pretend to be that person and write a quick
autobiography. "Hi, my name is Abraham Lincoln. I was the 16th
president of the United States..."
I'll post more ideas as they come to me OR send me a message if you have another idea that you'd like to share!
